First time use
When you first turn on your new device, you might see a setup wizard to help get you started. Take a look at the steps below to walk through the setup process.
- You can pair one Apple Watch to your iPhone at a time.
- To use your Apple Watch series 3 or newer, you'll need to pair it with an iPhone 6 or later running the latest version of iOS.
- To use your Apple Watch series 1 or 2, you'll need to pair it with an iPhone 5s or later running the latest version of iOS.
- Make sure you iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network and Bluetooth is turned on.
To turn on Bluetooth and pair with a headset or other device, follow these steps:
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Make sure your iPhone and Watch are next to each other, then tap Start pairing on the iPhone.
- Hold the Watch in front of the iPhone camera, centered in the square, until you see the message Your Apple Watch is Paired.
- On your iPhone, tap Set Up as New Apple Watch. If you've set up once before, you can tap Restore from Backup on your iPhone and follow onscreen steps.
- Read terms and conditions and tap Agree to continue.
- Sign in with the same Apple ID you use on your iPhone.
- Review the Workout Route Tracking and Shared Settings. If you change the settings of these services, those changes will apply to both of your devices.
- On your iPhone, choose whether to make a passcode for your Apple Watch. You'll need a Passcode for features like Apple Pay.
- If you tap Create a Passcode or Add a Long Passcode on your iPhone, you'll be asked to make a personal code using your Apple Watch and decide whether it will unlock with your iPhone.
- Tap Continue to setup Apple Pay, or tap Set Up Later in the Apple Watch App.
- Review the Emergency SOS information, then tap Continue.
- If your device has an eSIM, tap to Set Up Cellular or Skip This Step. See On-device Activation (ODA) below for additional information.
- Tap Install All to sync iPhone apps that work with Apple Watch.
- Only apps that are compatible with Apple Watch will sync.
- Tap Choose Later to sync only basic information like Mail, Contacts, and Messages.
- Your iPhone and Apple Watch will begin to sync.
- The length of this process varies depending on the amount of data you're syncing.
- Keep your devices close together until you hear a chime and feel a gentle tapping sensation from your Apple Watch.
On-device Activation (ODA)
- After the first-time use process or when changing a SIM on the Apple Watch with cellular, you'll be prompted to go through on-device activation (ODA).
- To manually start this process, on the iPhone open the Watch app and tap Cellular > Add a New Plan.
Change from one Watch with an eSIM to another
- Make sure you contact T-Mobile and provide your new Watch EID. If not, the Watch will try to add a new line on to your account.
- On the Activation screen, tap Continue. DIGITS will recognize that there is already an existing data paired with the DIGITS line.
- Select the number assigned to the previous device that you want to activate on the new Apple Watch, then tap Continue.
Purchased new from T-Mobile with AAL or setting up with a different iPhone
If your Watch was purchased through T-Mobile with AAL or you're setting it up with a different iPhone, it should already be activated with your T-Mobile service. Follow the steps below to complete activation:
- On the Activation screen, tap Continue to finish setting up DIGITS on the Apple Watch.
- Wait while the Apple Watch finishes DIGITS setup.
- Tap Continue to finish setting up your Watch.
Purchased anywhere other than T-Mobile and need to activate a line
If you purchased your device from somewhere other than T-Mobile, you'll be prompted to add a line for your Apple Watch.
- Make sure the device was purchased in the U.S. International models won't work in the U.S.
- If the device was originally used with another carrier, you must complete a master reset to release the EID.
- At the welcome screen, enter the last 4 digits of the primary account holder's SSN, then tap Continue.
- Select your data with paired DIGITS plan, then tap Continue.
- Review and agree to the Service Agreement, then tap Continue.
- Tap Continue to finish setting up your Watch.
